This position provides excellent opportunities to work outdoors maintaining the facilities in the Macon County Conservation District’s conservation areas.

The five conservation areas are well attended by the public. They include miles of hiking trails, fishing ponds, picnic shelters, numerous public and educational programs, and Friends Creek Conservation Area contains a campground. All of these features require regular upkeep.

Seasonal or Intern Interpreter

Application Deadline: Applications due by Friday, March 29, 2024
Wage: $15/hour

Terms of Position: June through mid-August. Up to 40 hours per week. Work week is Monday through Friday with alternating weekend duty.

Duties: The Seasonal or Intern Interpreter will develop and present programs on the natural and cultural history of Macon County. This includes but is not limited to: presenting public tours at Homestead Prairie Farm every other weekend during open houses; developing and leading the District’s History Camp with the Historic Sites’ Intern; leading nature and history programs for local libraries, school groups, scout groups, and more; assisting with other camps and activities; and other interpretive duties as needed. Qualifications: Graduation from, or current enrollment in a biology, wildlife, ecology, zoology, history, museum, education, or other relevant program at an accredited college or university is preferred, but not required. Weekend Naturalist

A Weekend Naturalist job opening is available within the Macon County Conservation District. Naturalists develop and present educational programming for youth and adults, greet visitors, and provide assistance and information to the public.

Compensation: $15/hour

Terms of Position: Permanent part-time position for 2-4 weekend days per month. Schedule will be 8.5 hours per day for any Saturdays worked, and 4.5 hours per day on any Sundays worked.

Qualifications: Associate’s degree or equivalent from a two year college or technical school, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a field of study that includes biology, forestry, history, zoology, botany, or environmental education. Site Technician

The Macon County Conservation District has a full time Site Technician position open. The selected candidate will be self-motivated with a well-rounded knowledge of park and conservation practices, as well as equipment and facility maintenance experience.

Site Technician at Friends Creek Conservation Area – 1 Position

Compensation: Salary of $41,000-$44,000 with a full benefit package, including retirement pension and health insurance.

Terms of Position: Full time, 40 hours per week. Outdoor, year-round duties in all weather. Will include limited evening and weekends duties as needed.

Duties: Under direction of the Unit Supervisor, the Site Technician performs daily maintenance of grounds, facilities, equipment, and vehicles. Site Technicians engage in extensive use of heavy equipment including use of chainsaws, tractors and mowers of various sizes, and other equipment as needed. See Full Job Description.

Qualifications: Two year degree from a technical school or junior college with course work in carpentry, electric, plumbing, mechanics, horticulture, forestry or related course of study, and two years experience in a related position. High School certificate and 3-5 years related experience acceptable. Experience with the use, and repair of chainsaws, tractors, light to heavy equipment, mowers, and brush cutters is a plus. Must have a valid Illinois driver’s licensed. Applicant must have a CDL Class A, a current Pesticide Operators License, a current First Aid and CPR certificate or the ability to acquire within 90 days of hire. Experience in any of the following also a plus: light carpentry, electric, plumbing, mechanics, masonry, and welding. Must possess a good driving record, and successfully complete a drug screen and criminal background check.

Director of Finance & HR

The position of Direct of Finance & HR with the Macon County Conservation District is available and applications are now being accepted.

Terms of Position: Full-Time, Exempt.

Duties: Responsible for the fiscal and personnel management functions for the Conservation District. The incumbent will act as a liaison to affiliated organizations, community groups, and other units of government, representing the District positively and ethically to visitors, patrons, and staff. Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree with a major in Public Finance, Accounting, Business Administration or related field. Thorough knowledge of accounting, budgeting, reporting processes, computer applications, internal audit and systems and control procedures. Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, computer-based accounting systems, cash management, investment instruments, and internal audit functions. Must be a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP) or hold an equivalent certification in the government accounting or HR field (SPHR).
