This position provides excellent opportunities to work outdoors maintaining the facilities in the Macon County Conservation District’s Conservation Areas.

The five Conservation Areas are well attended by the public. They include miles of hiking trails, fishing ponds, picnic shelters, numerous public and educational programs, and Friends Creek Conservation Area contains a campground. All of these features require regular upkeep.

Duties: Working outdoors cleaning restrooms, campground shower house, campsites, and pavilions. Includes trash removal, litter control, and posting pavilion reservations. Performs grounds maintenance for picnic areas, campsites, and trails, such as: mowing, trimming, raking, seeding, planting, mulching, and watering. See Full Job Description.

Qualifications: Minimum age 18, high school diploma or GED, a valid Illinois Driver’s License, and good driving record. Must successfully complete a drug screen and criminal background check.

Seasonal Camp Host

Seasonal Camp Host for Friends Creek Conservation Area – 1 Position

Application Deadline: Position open until filled

Wage: $15.00/hour

Terms of Position: April through October 2025. Work Thursday through Monday and off Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday-Saturday work hours are 11am-7pm, Sunday-Monday 11am-3pm with flexibility up to 35 hours per week.

The Campground Host serves as the point of contact for campers and manages the day to day operations of the Friends Creek Campground at Friends Creek Conservation Area. Under direction of the Unit Superintendent, performs daily maintenance of the Friends Creek Campground and facilities.

This is a seasonal position available from April through October. Work Thursday through Monday and off Tuesday and Wednesday.   Thursday-Saturday work hours are 1-7pm, Sunday-Monday 1-7pm.

Qualifications:

  • Substantial experience camping in public campgrounds and knowledge of typical needs/questions of camping
  • Must possess basic computer skills and be able to reserve and register campers using reservation software
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certified (or ability to obtain certification within 2 months of employment)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with District staff
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to deal with the public in a professional and courteous manner at all times
  • Must be friendly, helpful, approachable, and service-oriented
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Have valid Illinois Driver’s License

Essential Functions:

  • Greet campers upon their arrival, complete check-in and registrations
  • Provide information and offer assistance to campers as needed
  • Maintain clean and orderly campground site
  • Check and perform servicing of restrooms, comfort station, pavilions, grills, fire rings, refuse cans, and other facilities on a regular basis to maintain cleanliness
  • Make regular circuits of the campground to offer assistance and watch for potential problems
  • Encourage and ensure compliance with campground rules and regulations and report any situations that require attention to the Site Superintendent and/or other District staff
  • Post and remove registration cards at campsites
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as litter pick-up
  • Post advertisements for District events and update information on bulletin boards
  • Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles, equipment and tools after proper instruction and training; including, but not limited to, golf cart, weed eaters, saws, drills, etc.
  • Uses proper safety procedures and equipment to maintain safe working conditions to insure employee and public safety.
  • Maintains satisfactory working relationships with District employees and the general public.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Occasionally may assist in carpentry, plumbing, electrical and landscaping construction projects.
  2. Occasionally may have to address public inquiries and, if necessary, direct them to the correct person for proper answer.

Psychological Considerations:

  1. Must work around general population in public areas and exercise common sense when in the public’s sight.

Physiological Considerations:

  1. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  2. Physical dexterity and fine motor skills to operate machinery and equipment.

Environmental Considerations:

  1. Exposed to various weather conditions including extreme heat, and rain.
  2. Protective clothing must be worn when applicable.
  3. Indoor environmental conditions include lighting and temperature.
  4. Occasional hazardous working conditions on construction sites and along roadways.

Cognitive Considerations:

  1. Must be able to comprehend directions and implement them.
  2. Must use good safety awareness and judgment.
  3. May be required to respond to emergencies.
