2008 Summer Camps for Kids

The Macon County Conservation District has offered quality day camp experiences to the youth of Macon County for over 20 years.

Through hands-on, outdoor experiences, including hikes, arts and crafts, games and activities, children will have a fun and exciting fall while they gain awareness and knowledge of the "natural" world and an appreciation of local history.

Our programs are experience based, we don't just talk about a concept, we go out into the world and participate in it. It is a well known fact that children learn best through experience and play. We offer both.

Our experienced staff provide a caring atmosphere, responsibility, group unity, and don't forget fun, in a beautiful outdoor setting.

How Do I Register For Camp?

Summer Camp Registration/Waiver

When does registration start?

The first day of registration will be on March 29, 2008 starting at 9:00 a.m.

Where do I register?

Registration must be done in person at Rock Springs Nature Center. Relatives, neighbors, and friends can register for you, but the camp waiver has to be filled out by a parent or guardian.

You are not registered for camp until payment is received.

When do I have to register by?

  • We accept registration for Earth Adventures until June 19, Outdoor Adventures at Fort Daniel Conservation Area until June 20, Junior Pioneer Camp until June 25, and Pioneer Adventure Camp until June 26.
  • For X-treme Camp we prefer that campers are registered at least five days in advance of the camp date.
  • For Mini Camp we prefer that campers are registered at least two days in advance of the camp date so ample materials are available.

How do I pay for camp?

We accept Cash, Credit Cards and Checks made payable to MCCD.

Credit Cards are accepted Monday through Friday at our business office located in the lower level of Rock Spring Nature Center.

What papers do I need to fill out?

  • We require that all camp parents/guardians fill out a waiver.
  • The waiver covers all children in the family and is effective from April 30, 2008 through April 30, 2009.
  • The waiver must be submitted by the first day of camp.

How does the early bird registration work?

  • Early bird registration runs from March 29, 2008 (9:00 a.m.) until April 26, 2008 (4:30 p.m.).
  • During this time period you will receive a discounted rate for the summer camps.
  • $5.00 discount for Earth Adventures, Junior Pioneer Camp, Mini Camp – Nature Explorers, Mini Camp – Nature Detectives, Outdoor Adventures at Fort Daniel Conservation Area, and Pioneer Adventure Camp.
  • $2.00 discount for Mini Camp – Toddler Camp and Mini Camp – My First Camp.

How does the multi-child discount work?

  • The multi-child discount only applies to Earth Adventures, Junior Adventure Camp, Outdoor Adventures at Fort Daniel Conservation Area, Pioneer Adventure Camp, and X-treme Camp.
  • You will pay the regular fee for the first child and then for each additional child from the same family you will receive a $5.00 discount.
  • For example: If you register three campers from the same family for Earth Adventures during the early bird registration, the discount would work like this: $55 for the first camper, $50 for the second, and $50 for the third.

How does the flexible scheduling work?

  • Flexible scheduling only applies to Earth Adventures, Outdoor Adventure Camp at Fort Daniel Conservation Area, Junior Pioneer Camp, and Pioneer Adventure Camp.
  • The flexible scheduling allows you to sign up for the weeks that work for your family.
  • For example: When you are signing up for Pioneer Adventure Camp and you know that you have to miss the third week because of a family vacation, you may sign up for all but the third week and pay $50 instead of $60.
  • Flexible scheduling dates must be selected by May 31, 2008.

What if I need a refund?

  • Refunds for Earth Adventures, Junior Pioneer Camp, Outdoor Adventure Camp at Fort Daniel Conservation Area, and Pioneer Adventure Camp will not be issued after May 31, 2008.
  • To obtain a refund for Mini Camps and X-treme Camps, we must be notified five days before the camp session.

What You Need to Know Before Coming to Camp!

What is the camp dress code?

  • For their safety outdoors, all campers are required to wear long pants, sturdy shoes, and socks.
  • Hats are recommended but not required.
  • Any camper not meeting the dress code will not be allowed to participate in camp.

Should my child(ren) wear sunscreen and/or bug spray during camp?

Can my child(ren) switch camp days throughout the six-week sessions?

  • A child should attend camp on the day he/she registered for each week
  • If the child cannot attend on their schedule day, arrangements to attend on another day can be made by speaking to your child’s counselor, but is dependent on class size.

Will there be a Great Can Contest again this year?

  • Yes! As in previous years, the Earth Adventures Day Camp will hold its “Great Can Contest” for the campers to bring in empty aluminum cans for recycling.
  • Awards are given out to the group that brings in the most cans, the individual from each group that brings in the most cans, and the individual who brings in the most cans overall.
  • We ask that cans are brought in pre-counted in sealed trashed bags. Cans will not be counted here at camp so make sure you know how many you are bringing in!
  • Cans are to be brought to the lower level Earth Adventures room at the beginning of the camp day, where a volunteer will take them and record the number for each camper.
